Rice research in Europe is vital for ensuring the quality, productivity and environmental sustainability of rice production. By focusing on innovation, adaptation to (climate) change and identification of sustainable agricultural practices, European research helps the sector to face current and emerging challenges, secure the future of rice production, while supporting biodiversity, conserving natural resources, and meeting growing consumer demands for high-quality and diverse rice products.
"In this context, the establishment of a collaborative and multidisciplinary network on rice research could represent an important benefit for the sector, and play an important role in strengthening research around important themes related to the need to improve the productive, environmental and socio-economical sustainability and resilience of European rice cropping systems, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of European rice at a global scale. In analogy with the MEDRICE network which operated for several years within the FAO, such an organization could set out to reach several key objectives."
